This gripper grips small parts with precision

There were many things we couldn’t do during the COVID-19 pandemic, but there were some things we did really well. For example, we were able to focus intensively on our product designs. The CLG 30-006 was designed during this period and now adds a true specialist in the handling of small parts to our product portfolio.

Whilst the pandemic had the world firmly in its grip in 2020 and 2021, many companies felt a growing need to protect their staff more effectively, minimise contact and automate core processes. It became apparent that companies whose manufacturing processes were at least partially automated had an advantage. For them, it was easier to comply with social distancing rules without reducing production. Automation also helps to bring value chains back to Germany, thereby making us less dependent on global crises. “Smart robotics offers us the opportunity to replace repetitive or physically demanding work, thereby improving working conditions.” – Dr Karsten Weiß, founder and managing director of Weiss Robotics. Here at Weiss Robotics, we have been designing intelligent gripping systems for industrial and cobot applications since our foundation in 2008. With the new CLG 30-006, we expanded our product portfolio in 2020 – the year of the pandemic – to include a true specialist in small-part handling.

Automation simplifies processes

Challenging tasks require smart, versatile solutions. The CLG servo-electric gripper features an internal memory for gripping force, opening and closing width, and speed. This allows each work step to be saved individually within the work programme. As this incomparably small and lightweight servo-electric gripper requires neither specialised software nor a control system, it can be integrated quickly and easily into any process or laboratory automation system.

Sensorless gripper detection

The CLG features an integrated gripper control system with workpiece detection and grip monitoring. This guarantees safe handling even in difficult situations. Thanks to its precise servo-electric drive, the gripper fingers can be flexibly pre-positioned, allowing different workpieces to be gripped without the need for changeovers. An application using a CLG is therefore cost-effective even for small batch sizes and is ideally suited to flexible manufacturing.

Advantages of IO-Link

IO-Link is a fieldbus-independent interface that enables full communication right down to the ‘last metre’ at the field level. With IO-Link, the CLG is connected to the control level via a cost-effective point-to-point connection. As an open interface, IO-Link can be integrated into all common fieldbus and automation systems. All gripping parameters can be read in real time, thereby speeding up the production process.

A true expert in small-part handling

Thanks to its compact design, the CLG can be easily integrated into equipment with limited space or mounted on small robots. With its infinitely variable force control ranging from 10 to 30 N, the CLG can handle even the smallest and most delicate workpieces with ease. The external proximity switches normally required are not needed, which minimises the gripper’s interference contour and significantly increases process reliability.
